UEFA Champions League Draw 2026/27: Pots, Format and What Happens
The Champions League draw is no longer a traditional eight-group ceremony. All 36 clubs enter one league phase, and the draw determines eight different opponents for each team.
Every club is placed into one of four pots of nine teams. Each club is drawn against two opponents from every pot, including its own pot, with one fixture at home and one away against teams from each pot.
That system guarantees major fixtures even for the highest-ranked clubs. Pot 1 includes Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Inter, Manchester City, Arsenal, Barcelona and Atlético Madrid.
Pot 2 includes Borussia Dortmund, Roma, Sporting CP, Aston Villa, Porto, Manchester United, Club Brugge, Real Betis and PSV, meaning several heavyweight matchups can appear before the knockout rounds.
The draw determines opponents, but not the final date and kickoff time of every fixture. UEFA will publish the detailed league-phase schedule after the draw has been completed.
The top eight teams in the final league-phase table qualify directly for the round of 16. Clubs finishing ninth to 24th go into knockout phase play-offs, while the remaining teams are eliminated from the competition.

How the Champions League League-Phase Draw Works
The draw is built to create a balanced schedule without forcing every club to play all 35 possible opponents. Pot allocation is based on UEFA club coefficients, but even Pot 1 clubs face two other Pot 1 opponents.
Computer assistance is used after a club is drawn to determine valid opponents while respecting competition restrictions. The process must prevent invalid pairings and maintain the required home-and-away balance.
Each club therefore receives a unique set of eight league-phase opponents, producing a broader mix of matchups than the old four-team group format.
The league phase begins in September and runs through January. Clubs collect points in one 36-team table rather than separate groups, making every result relevant to the overall ranking.
